The name Anhur derives from ˁn-ḥr, meaning “He Who Brings Back the Sky” or “He Who Brings Back That Which Is Far Away.”
According to legend, Anhur brought back to Egypt his divine consort Mehit (Menhet), the Lioness Goddess of Nubia, who represented the Moon or the Flame of the Eye of Ra that had fled to the South.
This myth symbolizes the return of the lost divine energy and the restoration of balance between Sun and Moon, Spirit and Matter.

Anhur was venerated as the God of just war, patron of soldiers and protector of pharaohs in battle.
He is often depicted as a tall and powerful man, wearing a long robe, a royal beard, and a crown of four feathers, armed with a spear or sword.
